Hotz Mats Deep Space Mat

hotzdeepspaceheader

It’s finally here!

After a long wait my new mat has finally arrived.  You can’t imagine how happy I was to see it waiting for me after work.

The mat is gorgeous.  The star pattern and nebula artwork are stunning.  To see it in person is something pictures cannot do justice to.

One Good Side Deserves Another

hotzdeepspace2And, oh by the way, it’s double sided.  That’s right, on one side I have 1.5″ hexes for aerospace fighter dog fights and furballs.  On the other is 1″ hexes to add the extra space required for the long range weaponry of Warships.

I love having the flexibility and just can’t wait to play out my first battles in space.

Games To Play

I’ve got a list of games and After Action Reports dying to be written.  After such a long wait I’m excited to finally get a chance to round up some Aerospace figures for a proper space battle.

  • Aerospace Grinder aka The Furball
  • A proper Warship battle
  • Case White anyone? (using new BattleForce rules of course)

The Troubling Thing Is

I ordered this mat in December of last year.  For a while Hotz didn’t even respond to emails requesting status.  After paying so much good money I expected better service.  I got so worried in fact that I made a post about it earlier this year after hearing similar stories from other Battletech players on the forums.

To make matters worse, the mat is not exactly as I had ordered.  I had requested that the nebula patterns be made blue instead of the red he usually uses.  It still looks great but after waiting so long and being so very patient I was hoping that at least my order would be correct.

I contacted Hotz with my concern and he replaced the mat for me very quickly.  I am happy with my mats and can’t wait to play out some great games.

If you have the time to wait and the money to burn, the product is amazing.  You just need faith that Hotz will eventually take care of you.

  1. Jason n TX Said,

Wow, is that thing as big as I think it is? It’s amazing compared to what me and my buddies play on. I made a 2×2 board that has sand glued onto it texture and then its painted in brown and green for dirt and grass. And we play mini rules on top of that so the fighting is very quick, even with a lot of scenery on the board. But that thing… is… huge… We don’t know aerospace rules but looking at that makes me want to learn. :)

  2. Brian Said,

The mat is a full size 4 feet by 6 feet.

Strategic Operations is definitely your friend. Long live the Warship!

  3. Jason n TX Said,

I got all 4 books in PDF, but I’m a returning BTech player and only played 2nd Edition about 9 years ago. Even then we only played with mechs. I’m deprived :( I wanna fire a capitol laser!

  4. Adam Easykill Said,

Excellent matt dude, i want one!!! oh bit random but i found a site that does BT card models to a “almost” 28mm scale… and they are free :P http://www.mechwarrior3.org/wforum/viewtopic.php?t=3244&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Been using them for generic sci f games – so CBT mad that every game as to be CBT :P

  5. quigs Said,

Yeah, we seriously need a warship fight. My mjolnir will pummel you into submission.

  6. Figor Said,

    Hi from Spain…

I´ve been thinking about buying a standard matt from Hotz to play BT and make some scenography. Do you recommend me it? Which scale could be better? the standard BT hex or a little bigger?

    Thks

  7. Brian Said,

Figor, I love the end product that Hotz delivers but they have been flaky in the past with on time deliveries. If you are not afraid of a potential wait, they are absolutely fantastic.

I would recommend a little bigger hex than standard. It will allow for more room to fit larger or more awkwardly posed miniatures. I use the 2″ hexes and have really enjoyed then.

  8. Figor Said,

Thks Brian, i`m not afraid of a potential wait if the product is fine.

I was thinking about playing using a 2″ hex mat or a 1´75″ one. Do you have images playing on your 2″ hex mat? and, which size is this nebula mat?

  9. Brian Said,

    Figor,

Here are two great examples of the 2 inch green mat I have:

    http://www.scrapyardarmory.com/2009/05/12/bullet-in-the-blue-sky/

The first link I used regular miniatures while in the second link, I am using MechWarrior minis on homemade 2 inch bases.

The space map above is doublesided and includes 1.5 inch and 1 inch heses. I got a smaller size for the space mat because you need lots more hex space to run around when you use aero ranges.
